A commitment that starts with a car.
Subaru and over 600 dealers nationwide are dedicated to ensuring that owning a Subaru will be every bit as satisfying
as driving one. ❧ At the same time, we’re also dedicated to maintaining a planet we can all enjoy. Which is why we
support conservation and recycling programs like the U.S. Forest Service’s “Tread Lightly!” Additionally, Subaru is
voluntarily participating in the National Low Emission Vehicle (NLEV) Program beginning with the 1999 model year.
What does that mean to you? Simply put: Cleaner air. Vehicles meeting the program requirements are up to 70 percent
cleaner than vehicles meeting today’s federal emission standards. ❧ Of course, our commitment to the environment
is matched only by our commitment to the American economy. In fact, close to 70% of Subaru vehicles sold in the U.S.
are assembled top to bottom at our Subaru-Isuzu Automotive (SIA) plant in Lafayette, Indiana. We’ve added approximately 5,000 jobs in the U.S. By using hundreds of American suppliers and vendors, Subaru has also made a positive
impact on 20,000 jobs nationwide, significantly contributing to the U.S. economy. ❧ As these numbers continue to
grow, so, too, will our dedication. Not only to the people who build Subaru cars, but also to the people who buy them.

You want the freedom and ruggedness of a sport-utility vehicle (SUV), but you miss the
ease and drivability of a passenger car. Now you can have it all. By expertly combining
the functionality of an SUV with the comfort of a car, the 1999 Subaru® Forester® gives
you the best of both worlds. And it’s also given the experts something to rave about.
Car and Driver was so dazzled it gave Forester the highest overall rating when compared to Honda CR-V,
Jeep Cherokee and the Toyota RAV4.1 And Money magazine was impressed enough to name Forester
the “Best Buy” in the SUV class.2 It’s easy to see why. ❧ Compared to a typical SUV, Forester is easy
to drive, easy to park and easy to get into and out of. And while it’s full of unique attributes,
Forester also has the traditional features you look for in an SUV. ❧ Plus with our long history of producing
All-Wheel Drive vehicles, you can rest assured that the Forester will enable you to remain safely in control on
just about any surface and in any weather conditions. In fact, according to The New York Times, when tested against
its prime competitors, the Forester “…has an advantage in handling. It conquered winding roads and tight corners
with plenty of grip and agility.”3 ❧ Of course, the Forester is more than just serious accolades. As Road &
Track’s Open Road says, “…just because the Forester is so darn sensible doesn’t mean it isn’t fun
to drive.”4 Which is why we agree with Automobile magazine that
“…the Forester seems perfectly placed on the market, the result
of a sound concept followed up by brilliant execution.”5 ❧ Read
on and learn more about the Forester, Forester L and
Forester S. Each one displays all the versatility that expresses the Subaru
driving philosophy: helping people get more out of their lives. It’s a
philosophy that makes it easy to understand why 96% of Subaru
All-Wheel Drive cars sold in the last 10 years are still on the road.6

Subaru AWD delivers power
to all four wheels. If the
front wheels start slipping
on a slick surface, their
power is instantly redirected
to the rear wheels. If the
rear wheels slip, their
power is transferred to the
front wheels. And unlike
most 4 x 4s, there is no need
to manually engage Subaru
AWD. When a vehicle is
braking, weight shifts forward, reducing rear traction.
When accelerating, the
opposite is true. On curves,
dynamics are always
changing. Whether you’re
braking, accelerating or
cornering, traction is there
when you need it. In all
cases, Subaru AWD responds
by transferring power from
the wheels that slip to the
wheels that grip.
The rear suspension even
provides passive rear-wheel
steering as cornering
forces increase. The rear
wheels turn with the car
and actually help steer for
more stable tracking when
cornering hard.
The heavy-duty raised
4-wheel independent
suspension provides predictable handling on- and
off-road. Extra-long wheel
travel helps keep tires
firmly planted, generating
surefooted stability over
rough surfaces and winding
roads. The low-friction
design with S-shaped coil
springs minimizes the
impact of bumps. Front and
rear stabilizer bars reduce
vehicle lean. Rear L-arm
bushings in the front suspension are liquid-filled
to dampen vibrations for
occupants.
Subaru All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Long Travel Independent Suspension
Unlike an in-line or vee
engine’s pistons, which are
set vertically, the boxer’s
pistons are arranged horizontally, allowing lower
engine placement and a correspondingly lower center
of gravity. This contributes
to superior cornering and
handling and helps improve
stability, making Forester
less susceptible to body roll
on curves. The horizontally
placed pistons dampen each
other’s vibrations for quiet
performance. The design
also allows use of a shorter,
lighter crankshaft that
minimizes engine wear and
creates a more responsive
engine.
In-Line Engine
Subaru Boxer Engine
Horizontally Opposed Boxer Engine
Every Forester is built around the Subaru All-Wheel
Driving System, which features a 165 hp horizontally
opposed boxer engine, full-time All-Wheel Drive and
long travel 4-wheel independent suspension. ❧ Subaru
AWD continuously distributes engine power to all four
wheels, providing control and traction for sloshing
through mud, mushing through snow or just commuting home on a wet and slippery night. Road &Track
describes the Subaru system, “…wheels should do
more than roll; they should be driven. The optimum
in active safety is for every wheel – the contact with
the road or off-pavement trail – to both brake and
accelerate.”1 ❧ So whether you’re slashing through a
twisting mountain pass or taking side roads to avoid
rush hour traffic, the Subaru All-Wheel Driving System
always helps to maximize power, performance and
handling. Road &Track refers to it as “That kind of
beat-the-bushes performance that will leave other
SUV hybrids such as Toyota RAV4 (120 bhp) and
Honda CR-V (126 bhp) in the dust.”1 While The New
York Times says, “Braking is not only carlike, but similar
to that of a sports car. According to Car and Driver
magazine, the Forester’s braking approaches that of
a Porsche 911.”2 All this adds up to more control and
confidence for you.

Just a few of the more
thoughtful touches of the
Subaru Forester include a
handy storage compartment
for your sunglasses, which is
located in the overhead console. Located on the driver’s
side sunvisor, you will also
find compartments to store
pens, a small calculator and
items like business cards
or a prepaid calling card.
Practical features of the
Forester include a concealed
armrest compartment in
each door and 55/45 split
fold-down rear seats.
Forester S instrument panel shown in Gray with optional equipment.
One reason Forester is truly different from a traditional
SUV is that it has the comfort, driving and handling
characteristics of a car. Road &Track puts it this way,
“The cabin is a model of carlike civility. Subaru designers should get a gold star for the seats; supportive yet
form fitting, settling into the driver’s chair is like sitting
in an enormous hand.”1 ❧ Yet, for all its comfort, the
Forester also has plenty of power, strength, ruggedness,
agility and the control many SUVs simply don’t have.
In fact, Money magazine says, “…the Forester has a
more powerful engine than the Toyota and handles
better on curvy roads. Its hauling capacity (64.6 cubic
feet) tops the RAV4 as well.”2 ❧ We’ve put a lot of
features into the Forester that reflect what people really
do with their SUVs. Features like storage compartments
in the dash, heater ducts for rear passengers, dome light
with delay, dual map lights and an optional gauge pack
with a compass, outside temperature gauge, altimeter
and barometer. Forester also offers 12-position adjustable rear seatbacks, armrest storage pockets, four
conveniently placed cup holders and many other convenient storage compartments throughout. ❧ If you
want an easy-to-drive, rugged sport-utility vehicle with
the kinds of features that make a big difference when
you’re out in the real world, you can’t do any better
than a Subaru Forester.
1 Road &Track’s Open Road, Spring 1997.
2 1998 Car Buyer’s Guide, Money Magazine, March 1998.
And your world.
One of the many standard conveniences of the Forester is the handy
underfloor storage compartment in
the cargo area. It is the perfect size
to store up to four disassembled
fishing rods. So anytime the fish are
biting, you will be prepared.
Every Forester also comes standard with a
full-size spare tire, which is conveniently
stored under the rear cargo area floor. Not
only do you have the peace of mind of a fullsize spare when you are away from home,
but you also have yet another handy storage
space that can hold up to 12 cans of soft
drinks and cooler packs.
It’s amazing what you’ll find
in the cargo area of every
Forester. Like large side cargo
storage pockets, a 12-volt
power outlet and a large, flat
cargo area with tie-down
hooks.
Forester S shown in Aspen White with optional equipment.
Forester. The sport-utility
that takes the work
out of having fun.
Its strengths are obvious, yet Forester excels in another
important area: the “easy to have fun with” department.
❧ One reason is that Forester isn’t burdened with the
typical SUV’s hulking size. Another is that it’s engineered for comfort, nimble handling and passenger car
safety. ❧ Plus Forester lets you take your fun with
you. A low top-hinged tailgate and low liftover height
make it easy to load and unload all your stuff. And,
there’s room for even more on the standard roof rails
and crossbars. ❧ You can even personalize your
Forester with a variety of genuine Subaru accessories.
❧ With all Forester has to offer, it’s no wonder that
Road &Track praised it saying, “Hats off for providing us with the first ‘car-utility’ in the marketplace.
And based on how fun and practical
it is to drive, it won’t be the last.”1
❧ Showroom stock or personalized down to the tailpipe, the
Forester is the SUV that will
take the hassle out of having
a good time.
1 Road &Track, July 1997.
Subaru is proud to be
the official vehicle of
Specialized® Bicycle
Components and the
Specialized Cactus
Cup Race Series.
For all its adventuresome abilities, Forester is one
SUV that provides real driver confidence. Again, the
big reason is the Subaru All-Wheel Driving System.
❧ Consumer Review says, “Subaru’s full-time all-wheel
drive system is among the best in the industry. The
system automatically sends power to the wheels with
the best traction. Its advantage is obvious in the snow,
rain and other inclement conditions, but there is also
an advantage to improved traction and drivability on
smooth, dry road surfaces.”1 ❧ Another key element is
a 4-channel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), standard
on L and S models, for controlled stopping power.
The Forester platform also offers excellent stability.
Automobile Magazine described Forester as “wide
and well-planted.”2 Its potent 165 hp boxer engine
also provides a safety factor, giving you plenty of
power to accelerate, pass and get away from trouble.
Even the design of the top-hinged tailgate adds to safety
by providing an unobstructed view through the rear
window. Quite reassuring when you’re changing lanes
or backing up. Passive safety features like dual air bags,
side-impact door beams and energy-absorbing crumple
zones are also standard. ❧ If you’re looking for an SUV
that puts safety first, Forester should be first on your list.

Forester. Putting you
safely in control.
Unlike traditional
SUVs, Forester
meets all federal
government passenger car safety
standards.
Every Forester features a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) including dual air
bags. These bags deploy instantly in case of a moderate to severe frontal impact
to supplement the protection provided by the front seat belts. However, these seat
belts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to front seat occupants who are out of
position should the bags deploy and to provide the best combined protection in a
serious accident. Children should always be properly restrained in the rear seat.

A standard feature on every Forester
is 12-position rear
seats. This feature
provides added
comfort for back
seat passengers and
allows for additional
carrying capacity
for unusually long
cargo.
A low step-in height is
just one more reason
the Forester is a
refreshing alternative
to a traditional sportutility vehicle.
All Forester models include standard power
windows with driver’s auto-down for onetouch operation. Power door locks are also
included on L and S models. And the controls? They’re placed near your fingertips.
In addition to the two front seat cup holders,
handy dual rear seat cup holders are standard on every Forester. They are thoughtfully
placed in the center console, providing easy
access for back seat passengers.
Forester S interior shown in Gray with optional equipment.
Open the Forester door and notice the low step-in
height. Then check out its 128 cubic feet of interior
room. Inside, you’ll find firm, deep seats, with thick
side bolsters for lateral support. Reclining rear seats
are positioned slightly higher to provide a great view as
well as great legroom. And since the Forester interior
is quiet, you’ll get full benefit of the 4-speaker AM/FM/
cassette stereo. ❧ Other features include CFC-free air
conditioning, driver’s seat height and lumbar adjustment
and power windows. Lift the rear tailgate, fold down
the 55/45 split rear seat, and you’ve got a flat, roomy
cargo area. Not to mention three underfloor storage
compartments. On the Forester L, add power door
locks, power mirrors and 4-channel ABS. Choose the
Forester S, and you’ll get cruise control and an All
Weather Package including heated outside mirrors,
heated front seats and a windshield wiper deicer. ❧ The

support conservation and recycling programs like the U.S.
